At the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Mizengo Pinda Campus, the focus on experiential learning continues to set students apart as future agricultural leaders. Recently, students pursuing a Diploma in Crop Production and Management took part in an educational field visit to the Mpanda Weather Station in Katavi.
This visit offered the students a unique opportunity to bridge classroom theory with real-world application. Guided by Mr. Juma Binda, Head of the Weather Station, the students were introduced to essential weather monitoring instruments and techniques vital for modern agriculture.
One of the key highlights of the visit was an in-depth explanation of the solar radiation measuring instruments. Mr. Binda provided practical demonstrations, showing students how to operate and maintain the equipment. This direct engagement gave students the chance to understand the role of solar radiation data in crop production and how it influences decision-making in agricultural practices.
Additionally, the students were trained in the use of the evaporation pan, an essential tool for measuring water loss through evaporation — a crucial aspect of water resource management in farming. Mr. Binda’s step-by-step guidance empowered students to not only observe but also actively participate in data collection and analysis.
This field visit reflects SUA’s commitment to nurturing practical, industry-ready graduates. By exposing students to real-world agricultural tools and methodologies, SUA Mizengo Pinda Campus equips its students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to tackle pressing challenges in agriculture.
The experience at the Mpanda Weather Station is just one of many practical learning opportunities designed to prepare students for impactful careers in agriculture. Through such initiatives, SUA Mizengo Pinda Campus continues to lead the way in fostering a new generation of skilled, knowledgeable, and environmentally conscious agricultural professionals.
