Students from the Mizengo Pinda Campus (MPC) of Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) have gained invaluable hands-on experience in seed production through a collaboration with Empien Company Limited, a producer of DK maize seeds. As part of their Diploma in Crop Production and Management program, the students embarked on an academic field trip to Empien Company’s seed production center in Nkasi, Rukwa Region, where they gained firsthand insights into the various stages of maize seed production.
Empien Company Limited, led by Director Mussa Ng’hwani, operates on 1,050 hectares of farmland dedicated to seed production, with 500 hectares currently cultivated with DK maize seeds. These seeds are widely used by farmers across Tanzania, contributing significantly to national agricultural productivity.
During the field trip, students explored Empien’s farms and witnessed modern agricultural technologies in action. They observed how drones are transforming farming practices by efficiently spraying fertilizers, pesticides, and disease-control chemicals. The showcased drone, capable of carrying up to 40 liters of agrochemicals at a time, significantly enhances efficiency. Second-year students even had the opportunity to operate the drone, gaining valuable exposure to advanced agricultural technologies.
In addition to drone technology, students examined the farm’s water sources and advanced irrigation systems, gaining insight into sustainable farming practices that help mitigate the effects of climate change. They were also introduced to a variety of modern agricultural machines and tools used in seed production, further enhancing their understanding of how technology improves productivity, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in farming operations.
This academic field trip has been instrumental in equipping SUA students with practical knowledge in seed production and advanced agricultural techniques. The collaboration between SUA and Empien Company underscores the importance of industry partnerships in bridging the gap between theoretical learning and real-world applications. By integrating classroom knowledge with practical experience, students are better prepared to drive innovation and efficiency in Tanzania’s agricultural sector.
SUA remains committed to producing highly competent graduates equipped with both theoretical and hands-on expertise. The university continues to emphasize experiential learning, ensuring students develop the skills necessary to succeed in modern agriculture.
